"Extinct" bee lands in front of scientist researching Pharohylaeus lactiferus

James Dorey admits he might be one of the luckiest researchers ever – when he went to find a native bee that had not been seen for nearly a century, one landed right in front of him.

“I was walking on the edge of a rainforest near Atherton in far north Queensland and I saw a bee land on a leaf,” he said.

“I took one look at it and pretty quickly realised what it was. I’ll admit that I was embarrassingly excited.”
