Sir Michael Hardie-Boys was NZ's Governor-General from 1996-2001. Before that, he was a judge. And before that he was a partner in his father's law firm. And in that capacity, he was the National Beekeepers' Assn solicitor!
There would have been many years of the NBA's history that it may not even have had a solicitor to call upon. But Hardie-Boys' involvement with the NBA, the early and middle 1970s, was a time that called on his expertise.
For most of its existence, the NBA elected its National Executive members, as well as its President and Vice-President, toward the end of the Annual Conference. I described some of that in a previour article: Elections for the National Beekeepers’ Association
During Hardie-Boys' time, another change requiring rule tweaking came with the Hive Levy Act.
Led by NBA President Ivan Dickinson, and supported by Hardie-Boys, the NBA did a substantial re-write of the NBA's rules. Hardie-Boys attended the NBA Executive meetings on numerous occasions. More significantly, he attended the two meetings in March and May 1976 when the rules were formally adopted.
And naturally, there were arguments at the March meeting that "inadequate notice had been provided", resulting in the expenses of the second meeting. And probably another few hours charged by Hardie-Boys' firm.

I'm thinking that these 1976 NBA meetings would have been Hardie-Boys' last beekeeping connection. He would soon after be appointed as a judge and then on to other things. I wonder if he ever told stories about beekeepers...
