There were bees on the island many years ago and to be honest I was pleased when they were taken off. Hives and related equipment are a risk when it comes to spreading mice and honeybees do compete with both native birds, reptiles and insects for what is a limited resource.
Not my island, so not my decision but it does raise the issue of whether hives should be placed in or near areas of great conservation value.

Many moons ago I visited Kapiti island and the volume of bird life was fantastic to see. We were turned inside out looking for mice before we boarded the boat. I can only hope the reserve is still being as well looked after. Even then there were concerns the private land would not be as diligent at pest control, but as far as I am aware, they have not caused a problem. I cant agree with the bees being there, but hope whoever is doing the beekeeping keeps the numbers low.
What an opportunity to be varroa free!
