Is this the same behaviour that makes retaining Metarhizium in the hive difficult ?

No, that's the hive temperature killing the fungus . . .until they forced it to evolve to handle hive temperatures: Directed evolution of Metarhizium fungus improves its biocontrol efficacy against Varroa mites in honey bee colonies - Scientific Reports (can download for free - aka 'open access')
